Sunday Edition: November 13, 2022

Happy Sunday! It’s been a busy couple of weeks, we spent the week before our anniversary in upstate New York, we stayed in Hudson and from there we visited Catskill and Kingston. The weather was so warm and beautiful, but I definitely failed packing! I didn’t look at the forecast ahead of time and assumed it would be chilly fall weather like we were having in Prince Edward County. Boy was I wrong, it was on average 22ºC! Definitely not sweater weather, haha! Many of the houses and buildings were built and designed in the late 1700s and early 1800s so the architecture is absolutely stunning.

We ate so much food, shopped ‘til we dropped, and walked until our legs felt like they were going to fall off!

Restaurants we’d absolutely recommend:

  • Dinner at Wm. Farmer and Sons Restaurant, this was one of the best meals and overall dining experiences I’ve ever had. My only complaint is that they only had one mocktail option. The oysters were divine, the honeynut squash with pickled chilis was out of this world, and Topher is still dreaming about the beef tartare

  • Brunch and Dinner at Kitty’s was unreal, the food is classic but also really inventive and done really really well. We were trying to figure out how to categorize the foods Kitty’s but it doesn’t fit into a box. The Hakurei Turnips with labneh were mind-boggling delicious, don’t sleep on the Broccoli white cheddar, urfa chili, anchovy mayo. For brunch Topher had the pastrami smoked salmon and my goodness it was so good.

  • Village Coffee and Goods in Kingston was the perfect spot of breakfast, brunch, or lunch. The food is so delicious, their coffee is really damn good, and the vibes are right. Plus, they have a super cute selection of pottery and other goodies!

  • Drinks at The Maker Lounge. The vibes and feeling of this spot are immaculate.

  • Dinner at Lil Deb’s Oasis. The food is really good, although they go pretty overboard on their use of chilis, the drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are delicious, and it’s just a fun spot.

In other non-travel related news, our renovation is still chugging along, but we really are on the last legs!! The countertop goes in next week, the cleaners come next week and we’ve started unpacking, woohoo!! It already looks incredible and I’m really excited for this last little bit to come together. I’ve taken a mini-hiatus from publishing new recipes until the renovation is done, but I promise new recipes and content will be coming in the next few weeks and it’ll be better than ever, I promise! Tell me in the comments what recipes you want to see.

Questions of the week

Q: how do you like your coffee?

A: I love an Americano generally. I start with whole beans from small roasters like Rosso or Detour, grind them up in our Bodum grinder then pour a double shot using our espresso maker. Fill the mug with water and a glug of oat milk and it’s a perfect cuppa every time! On weekends I love an oat milk latte!

Q: favorite holiday recipe to make?

A: these chai sugar cookies are one of my favourites!

Q: what are your favourite store-bought ingredients to have on hand?

A: pumpkin puree, sweet chili sauce, curry paste, puff pastry, phyllo pastry, broth and a variety of tomato sauces.

Q: do you miss working with clients as a nutritionist?

A: honestly no. My favourite part of working with clients was making meal plans and recipes for them that got them inspired to be in the kitchen. I loved hearing about their favourite recipes from the plan and seeing the changes that simple, delicious, nourishing food gave folks. Now I get to do that at a larger scale and share my recipes with people all over the globe and I hope that you feel excited and inspired to try a new recipe that you find here!
